Clonezilla Workshop@LSM 2013

Clonezilla is an open source, free software solution for disk imaging and cloning. For system administrators, if massive or unattended deployment is required, Clonezilla is one of the choices. It supports a variety of file system types, including that of GNU/Linux, Mac OS, MS Windows, FreeBSD, Minix, and VMWare ESX. To be more specific, the following file systems are supported:

  1. ext2, ext3, ext4, reiserfs, reiser4, xfs, jfs of GNU/Linux
  2. FAT, NTFS of MS Windows
  3. HFS+ of Mac OS
  4. UFS2 of BSD
  5. VMFS3 and VMFS5 of VMware ESX
  6. Minix of MINIX

Two types of Clonezilla are available, Clonezilla live and Clonezilla SE (server edition). Clonezilla live is suitable for single machine backup and restore. While Clonezilla SE is for massive deployment.

In this workshop, we will introduce basic and advanced usage of Clonezilla. The audience will learn, for example, how to image a disk, restore an image, create unattended recovery Clonezilla live, and massively creating bootable USB flash drives on a single machine:

  1. Disk image saving and restoring
  2. Disk cloning
  3. Unattended recovery CD or USB flash drive
  4. Massively creating bootable USB flash drives on a single machine, e.g. this use case.
